Why we Pray for the Holy Souls in Purgatory
November 3, 2025

We observe this commemoration of All Souls, a day that traces its origins to the year 998 when an abbot in France set aside November the second for praying for all of the faithful departed. After celebrating All Saints Day on November the first, this idea that the day following we would pray for the holy souls in purgatory seemed like a natural connection. By the 13th century, November the second was established throughout the entire Church. When this day falls on a Sunday, as it does today, we have a special opportunity, as the last time was 2014 and the next time will be 2031.

Holy Mother Church offers a plenary indulgence for those who visit church on this day and pray the Our Father and the Creed, both of which we do during this Holy Mass. We form the intention of obtaining all possible indulgences for the Holy Souls. The Church permits her priests to wear black vestments at this Mass, acknowledging our grief. As St. Paul says, we grieve differently, not like those who lack hope. We can deal with death because we know that death has been conquered through the saving death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Today we are invited to pray for the holy souls in purgatory and to form that resolution: I want to be prepared for that day and that hour I do not know.
