Why we Pray for the Holy Souls in Purgatory

November 3, 2025

We observe this commemoration of All Souls, a day that traces its origins to the year 998 when an abbot in France set aside November the second for praying for all of the faithful departed. After celebrating All Saints Day on November the first, this idea that the day following we would pray for the holy souls in purgatory seemed like a natural connection. By the 13th century, November the second was established throughout the entire Church. When this day falls on a Sunday, as it does today, we have a special opportunity, as the last time was 2014 and the next time will be 2031.
